COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The women's tennis team (5-4, 0-0 ACC) returned home Saturday to the College Park Tennis Bubble to claim its fifth season victory. The Terps defeated the Syracuse Orangewomen 6-3.
No. 1 seed freshman Jessica Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Shareen Lai 7-6, 1-6,
7-6. Lai finished the 1999 season as one of the top 25 singles players in the East Region. Despite an ankle injury, which kept her from doubles competition, freshman Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) won 6-3,
6-0 over Anna Khvalina. Senior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) defeated Michelle Neveklovska 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 position. At No. 4, junior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) improved to a 5-3 record with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Masha Kabanova. In a rematch from last year, junior Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) defeated Zuzanna Borucka 6-2, 6-4.
Johnson teamed up with Walkowitz in the No. 1 doubles position, the duo was defeated 8-6 by Lai/Khvalina. Junior partners Valantin/Terrill defeated Neveklovska/Kabanova 8-2.
The Terps are back in action on March 18 in their first ACC match against Florida State. The match will be played in College Park at 1 p.m.
