COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After sweeping Morgan State on March 30, the Maryland softball squad (20-17, 2-0 ACC/SASA) finished this week's action with a pair of losses at the hands of Penn State. The Terrapins, who have been extremely effective at the plate recently, had trouble getting their offense going against the Nittany Lions on Saturday at the North Softball Complex.

Terp sophomore Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (11-8) took the loss in Game 1, striking out three and allowing 11 hits through seven innings. The Nittany Lions opened the scoring in the third with a three-run home run by first baseman Jenny Briz. Penn State extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning on three base hits and a Terp error, which would be the game's final score. Junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) put in a 2-for-3 effort in the first game of the doubleheader.

Lefty Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (3-4) was defeated in Game 2 by a 6-1 margin. The sophomore allowed one earned run on nine hits, striking out a batter in the loss. Four hits and three stolen bases put Penn State up 5-0 in the second as the Nittany Lions were able to capitalize on a Terp miscue. Maryland got one back in the bottom of the third when junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Stefanie Robinson (Avenel, N.J.). The Nittany Lions went up by the final count in the fifth when Briz scored Gina Bianchini on a fielder's choice. Burrell finished Game 2 with a 2-for-4 performance, while freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) added a pair of singles for the Terps.

The Terps play a pair of road doubleheaders this week, taking on George Mason April 4 at 3:30 p.m., before heading to Long Island April 7 for a 6:00 p.m. twinbill.
