BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) leads a parade of golfers who all shot in the 80's and the Maryland women's golf team is in striking distance of the team leaders after day one of the Campbell University Fighting Camel Invitational at the Keith Hills Country Club here today. The Terps, who are participating in only their third ever traditional spring event, are looking to better their school-best seventh place finish at the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational (March 16-17).
Clasper led Maryland on day one with an 11-over-par 83 and finds herself in a tie for 24th-place. She is looking to earn her second consecutive top-10 finish. Clasper is followed closely by freshman Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) who shot a 41 on the back nine to finish with a 13-over-par 85. Gibson will begin play on day two in a tie for 31st-place. Freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) also shot a 41 on the back nine and finished the day in a tie for 35th-place with a 14-over-par 86. Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) is tied for 41st (15-over-par 87) and Sarah Bedford (Montgomery Village, Md.) is tied for 48th (17-over-par 89) after the first round of play.
The host Fighting Camels of Campbell University hold the team lead as they scored 306 in round one. Laura Torrisi, a Campbell University senior, leads the event with a three-over-par 75. Penn State finished the day eight strokes behind the Camels with a 314 team score.
Play resumes Tuesday morning in the two-day event.
