The Terps faced one of their toughest opponents today when they met the Virginia Cavaliers in College Park. The nearly five-hour match ended with a close 5-4 victory for the Cavaliers. Maryland (6-8, 0-4 ACC) picked up three singles wins in the top three positions. Both teams forfeited a doubles match with the only doubles win going to Virginia (11-7, 1-3 ACC).
Jessica Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) continues her streak, winning her eighth straight match and earning a team-high 10 wins. She defeated Christie Scweer 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2. Freshman Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) played a difficult three-set match in the No. 1 position and defeated Amy O'Donnell 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. After almost three hours and three sets, junior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) won by decision over Henriette Williams 7-6, 5-7, 6-4. Senior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) dropped her match to Virginia losing 6-3, 6-3 to Leslie Cook. Jen Tuchband defeated junior Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.)
6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
The only doubles match played was at the No. 1 position. Virginia's Cook and Schweer defeated the freshmen duo of Causevic and Johnson 8-4. Virginia forfeited the No. 2 match and Maryland forfeited at No. 3.
The Terps return to action on Saturday when they square off against the North Carolina Tar Heels who are currently ranked 6th in the ACC. The match will be played at 1:00 p.m. in College Park.
