COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Terps battled through a five-hour match before defeating 37th-ranked North Carolina 5-4 today in the College Park Tennis Bubble. This is the first ACC win for Maryland (7-8, 1-4 ACC) this season and the decision came down to the No. 2 doubles match. Senior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) and junior Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) teamed up at No. 2 and played an impressive match, winning 9-7.
Terrill offered a stellar performance today, also earning a win at the No. 5 singles. She defeated Kate Pinchbeck 7-5, 7-5. Walkowitz dropped her match to Kendrick Bunn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Freshmen Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and Jessica Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) continue their winning streaks at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Causevic dominated Jessica Zaganczyk 6-3, 6-2. After losing her first set 2-6, Johnson fought back in the next two sets to defeat Caroline Hill. Junior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) is finding success at home this week. After defeating her Virginia opponent on Wednesday in a grueling two-and-a-half hour match, Valantin came in strong today beating Courtney Zalinski 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.
In doubles actions Causevic and Johnson dropped a close match to Mejia and Niebling 9-8 in the No. 1 spot. Walkowitz and Terrill defeated Bunn and Pinchbeck at No. 2.
The Terps continue their three-match homestand Sunday, April 9 in College Park. They will face No. 13 Duke at noon. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia 5-1 today in Charlottesville, Va. Duke currently stands at No. 2 in the ACC after losing its first ACC match in 12 years to Wake Forest last weekend.
