COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (28-29, 3-5 ACC, 4-6 SASA) suffered a pair of heartbreaking, one-run losses at the hands of the Princeton Tigers in their last doubleheader of the 2000 season.

Sophomore Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) went the distance in Game 1, scattering five hits. The only run of the ball game was unearned, as Princeton's Sarah Jane White singled and eventually scored on a Terp throwing error. Maryland put together a two-out rally in the sixth inning, threatening to score when junior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) singled to right. Pinch runner Amanda Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) scampered to third on a Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) base hit, but the Tigers held on for the 1-0 win.

The Terps jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2 in the top of the first inning, as junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) singled, and Potzman and sophomore Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) walked to load the bases. Senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) drilled a grounder off the glove of third baseman Lauren Poniatwoski, crossing Burrell and Potzman. The Tigers tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the second and extended to a 3-2 lead on a Mackenzie Forsythe RBI-groundout in the third. The Tigers stretched their advantage to 5-2 when shortstop Kim Veenstra smoked a two-RBI double to the left-centerfield gap. The Terps would not go away, loading the bases in the top of the fourth. Senior Sarah Putnam (Chesapeake, Va.) stepped in and poked a single up the middle to score freshmen Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Pa.) and Kipnis. Those runs were all the Terps would get, as the Tigers prevailed by a 5-4 margin.

The Maryland-Princeton match-up was recorded and produced for television by CN8 (Comcast Network), and will air on Comcast affiliates on Sunday, May 7 at 12:30 p.m. and on 1 p.m. on Monday, May 8.
