College Park, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team (1-2, 0-1 ACC) lost its first ACC match of the season Saturday when it fell 21-13 to NC State (4-6, 1-1) in Ritchie Coliseum. Leading the Terps was junior co-captain Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) who picked up his 20th victory this season. Weidman was one of four Maryland wrestlers to earn wins against NC State.
As determined by a random draw, the dual began with redshirt-sophomore Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) taking on Dustin Kawa at 174. Aquia started the match by earning the first two takedowns in the first period but he was defeated by a score of 10-9, the match was decided by riding time. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) followed with the first Maryland victory at 184. He defeated Jason Gore by a major 15-5 decision. Sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) battled through three tough periods before falling to Zach Breitenbach who is currently ranked No. 12 at 197 by InterMat. Heavyweight freshman James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.) lost a close 4-2 bout to NC State's Ricky Fowler.
At 125, redshirt-junior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) battled George Cintron through three difficult periods that were delayed several times because of an existing head injury to Cintron. The match was decided 4-2 in Cintron's favor. Junior Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) captured the second Terp win on the day when he decisioned Ryan McCollum 6-1, with more than one minute of advantage time, in the 133-pound weight class. This is York's 19th victory this season and second consecutive dual victory. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) earned his first dual victory by a close 8-7 decision over Oraefo Brown at 141. Redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) and junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J) both dropped major decisions to their Wolfpack opponents. Booth was defeated by Pierre Pryor who was the 2000 ACC champion at 157. Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) wrestled the last bout of the day at 165 earning the last Terp win and his 20th victory of the season. He defeated Scott Garren 7-2 with 1:08 in riding time.
The Terps are back in action on Jan. 24 when they face non-conference opponent, and local-rival, George Mason. Mason is 2-0 in dual competition after defeating VMI on Jan. 15 at home. Maryland meets Mason at 7:30 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum. The wrestling team wraps-up its four-match homestand on Jan. 27 when it faces Bucknell at 1:00 p.m.
