Wrestling Battles George Mason, Falls 29-12

Jan. 24, 2001

College Park, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team (1-3, 0-1 ACC) dropped a 29-12 decision to local-rival George Mason (3-0, 1-0 CAA) today in Ritchie Coliseum. Three Maryland wrestlers garnered wins against the Patriots. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) came off the bench hard to record the only Terp pin of the meet. Junior co-captain Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and redshirt-sophomore Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) both earned wins against their Patriot opponents. The meet began with the heavyweight match as determined by a random draw.

Freshman heavyweight James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.) was pinned by Brent Lancaster in 4:33. Maryland had to forfeit the 125-pound weight class due to illness putting Mason up 12 points after the first two bouts. York, who is currently ranked No. 20 at 133 by Amateur Wrestling News, easily defeated his opponent, Matt Hunckler, 9-3. York allowed Hunckler only one takedown in seven minutes. York also earned 2:32 advantage time. This win marked York's 20th on the season and third consecutive dual win. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) fought a tough match against Donnie DeFilippis who is currently ranked No. 5 at 141 by both Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat. DeFilippis decisioned Mansueto 8-2. Redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) and junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) each dropped matches to Mason in the 149 and 157-pound weight classes, respectively.

In the hardest fought bout of the night, junior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) lost by a major decision to Tony Howard 16-6. The match was an even battle until a late third-period rally by Howard, with two consecutive takedowns and two near-fall points, clinched the 165-pound-win in Mason's favor.

Aquia followed with a win evening out his dual record to 2-2 with an 8-3 decision over Nick Webster at 174. Aquia boosts his overall record to 12-6. Stork captured the spotlight at 184 when he pinned Chip Campbell in :55 to record the Terps' final win of the meet. Stork now holds a team-high record for falls on the season at eight. The pin tonight marks Stork's second quickest fall this season and his 16th victory. His fastest fall came at Penn State when he pinned Chad Eckert from Bloomsburg in :42. Stork now holds a 4-0 dual record, also a team high. Rounding out the meet was the 197 bout. Sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) fell 3-0 to Clay Fork.

The Terps will end their four-meet homestand on Jan. 27 when they face the Bison from Bucknell. The Bison are currently 7-4 in dual competition. The two teams last met on Jan. 30, 2000 in Lewisburg, Pa. where Maryland defeated Bucknell 31-6. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be held in Ritchie Coliseum. The Terps next match after Bucknell will be on Jan. 31 on the road against Rutgers. They will not return home again until they face ACC-opponent Virginia on Feb. 14.
