Millersville, Pa. - After turning in a stellar third-place performance at the Sunshine Open on Dec. 28, the Maryland wrestling team earned its second consecutive third-place finish Saturday at the Millersville Belles Invitational tournament with a team score of 115. Junior co-captain, and two-time NCAA qualifier, Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) captured the first-place title at 133. He defeated Binghamton's Andy Loux 7-4 in the final round. York also won his first match of the day by a major 11-3 decision over Slippery Rock's Greg McCarty. Six other Terps placed in the top six.
Redshirt-sophomores Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) and Jake Stork (Morhsville, Pa.) both placed second in the 174 and 184-pound weight classes, respectively. With these two wrestlers and York, Maryland had three performers in the finals. Aquia made an impressive entrance into the tournament when he defeated Penn's Michael Reitmeyer by a major 21-8 decision. He then won two more matches before dropping a 7-2 bout to Penn's Josh Henson in the finals. Stork earned two pins on the day on his way to a second place finish. In his first match he pinned Andy Bollhoefer from Penn in 1:30. In the semis, Stork felled James Madison's Dave Colabella in 5:26 before losing in the finals to Rutgers' Tom Tanis 11-3.
Junior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) defeated University of Pennsylvania-Johnstown's Ryan Buterbaugh 3-2 to take third place at 165. Weidman earned four wins on the day and a team high three falls. His fastest pin of the day was in 1:33 when he defeated Western Maryland's Tom Buzby. His last fall came in the consolation semi-final round when he pinned Millersville's Andy Cote in 5:14. In the 125-pound weigh class, redshirt-junior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) earned three wins on the day and placed fourth. In his first match, Guzzio pinned Karl Baum from Syracuse in 2:53. In the consolation semifinals, Guzzio defeated Slippery Rock's Adam Renner by a major 19-6 decision.
Junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) placed fifth in the 157-pound weight class. He racked up five wins on the day. Sophomore 197-pounder Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) earned sixth place and recorded three wins for the day.
The Terps are back in action on Jan. 17 when they host Navy at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park, Md. The dual meet begins at 7:30 p.m. This marks the beginning of a four-dual meet homestand where Maryland will also face NC State, local-rival George Mason and Bucknell. The Jan. 20 NC State dual will begin ACC competition for the Terps who are looking to challenge for first place in the conference.
