Feb. 1, 2001

New Brunswick, N.J. - The Maryland wrestling team (2-4, 0-1 ACC) lost its first dual meet on the road Wednesday night when it fell 22-9 to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (8-2). Three Maryland wrestlers garnered wins against Rutgers including both co-captains, juniors Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.). Both earned their 22nd victories on the season and marked their fifth dual meet wins. Redshirt-sophomore Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) won a close 4-3 victory at 174. The dual started with Aquia at 174 as determined by a random draw.

Aquia defeated Justin Haskins with a takedown in the last 30 seconds of the bout to secure Maryland its first victory. This win boosts Aquia's record to 13-7. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) fought a close match against Tom Tanis who is currently ranked No. 16 by Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat at 184. The match was decided 8-6 in Tanis' favor. At 197, Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) battled No. 20 ranked Rick Romero dropping a 6-0 decision. Maryland lost matches at heavyweight and 125 before earning their second win at 133. York led the match through three periods allowing Jon Rodriguez only one escape in the third period for a final score of 4-1. York also racked up more than a minute in advantage time. Junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.), in the closest bout of the night, fought Shane Engel-Folks at 157 through three periods, but a third period reversal by Booth was not enough to win the match as Engel-Folks won the decision 5-4 with riding time. The final Maryland victory came with the final bout of the day at 165. Weidman defeated Bryon Lauer 5-1, with 3:36 in advantage time.

The Maryland and Rutgers match will be broadcast on CN8, the Comcast Network, on Friday and Saturday. The match will be aired on Friday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 p.m.
