College Park, Md. -The Maryland wrestling team (4-4, 1-1 ACC) garnered its first ACC victory Saturday when it defeated the Duke Blue Devils 22-10 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Terps are now an even 1-1 in conference action as they prepare to face North Carolina Sunday in Chapel Hill.
Maryland earned seven wins on the way to a team victory. Junior co-captains Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) each picked up wins against Duke. York boosted his dual record to a perfect 6-0 at 133 when he defeated Sean Meakim 7-3. Weidman earned his 24th victory, a team-high, when he decisioned Tim Marcantonio 3-0 at 165. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) boosted his conference record to 2-0 with a major decision over Harry Clarke 13-5 at 141. Redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) won his first ACC match with an 11-7 win over Andy Soliman at 149.
The Terps also earned victories at the 174, 184 and heavyweight bouts. Redshirt-sophomore Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) downed Frank Cornely 10-4 at 174. This boosts Aquia to 15-7 on the season. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) defeated Tom Cass 11-4 at 184. Freshman heavyweight James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.) recorded his fifth win with an 11-8 victory over Levi Karrehm.
The Terps are back in action on Sunday when they face North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Carolina is currently holding in first place in conference competition. The match is slated for 2:00 p.m. Maryland then returns home on Feb. 14 to begin a three-match homestand that concludes the regular season.
