Maryland Falls 24-12 to North Carolina

Feb. 11, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Maryland wrestling team (4-5, 1-2 ACC) won four matches Sunday against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C before falling 24-12. The Tar Heels are currently ranked No. 1 in the ACC and hold a 3-0 conference record. The Terps are now 1-2 in the ACC after defeating Duke 22-10 on Saturday.

Leading the Terps was two-time ACC champion Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) at 133. He defeated Brad Byers 8-2 to boost his conference record to 3-0. York defeated Byers last March to claim the ACC title at 133 and make his second trip to the NCAA. York is looking to repeat that trip again in 2001. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.), another 2000 NCAA qualifier, defeated Mike Booth 8-2 at 141 to record his 21st win on the season. Redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) battled through three periods before dropping a major 20-8 decision to No. 7-ranked JohnMark Bentley. Junior co-captain Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) won by a 4-3 decision over Jason Wilson at 165. Weidman is also looking to make a repeat performance and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.), who has had a breakout season, captured the last Terp win with a 7-6 defeat over Nick Richmond. Richmond placed third at the ACC tournament in 2000.

Maryland is back at home on Feb. 14 to take on its final ACC opponent, Virginia, at 7:30 p.m. The Terps continue a three-match homestand on Feb. 16 when they face Howard and Old Dominion back-to-back. Matches begin at 7:00 and will be wrestled in Ritchie Coliseum. The homestand will wrap the regular season as the Terps prepare to head to the ACC tournament on March 3.
