COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team (4-6, 1-3 ACC) stumbled Wednesday in College Park, Md. against Virginia (6-7, 2-2 ACC) in the final ACC dual meet of the year. The Terps fell 20-15 to end the conference season with a 1-3 record. The Terps end the regular season, and three-match homestand, with a doubleheader against Old Dominion and Howard on Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Four Maryland wrestlers captured wins against the Cavaliers. Leading the Terps was junior co-captain Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) who posted a perfect 4-0 conference record by defeating Joe Alexander 6-4 at 133, this secures his place as one of the top wrestlers in the ACC. His overall record stands at 25-3 and he has won 13 consecutive matches. York is currently ranked No. 19 by Amateur Wrestling News. Redshirt-junior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) garnered an impressive victory with an 18-5 major decision over Ryan Stewart at 125. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) captured his 10th fall on the season when he pinned Jimi Massey in 1:29 as well as his fourth conference win. Stork holds the team-high for pins this season. This win also marks his 21st on the season in the 184-pound weight class. Sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) earned his first ACC win with a 3-2 decision over Zach Freday at 197.
The Terps are back in action on Feb. 16 when they host Old Dominion and Howard in the last dual meets of the season. Matches begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be wrestled in Ritchie Coliseum.
