COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team (6-6, 1-3 ACC) ended the regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader versus the Howard Bison and the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Terps defeated both opponents in a night dominated by falls. Maryland earned a total of five falls, while the Bison earned two and the Monarchs earned three. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) earned his 11th and 12th pins tonight and still leads the team in falls.
Maryland squared off first against Howard with matches beginning at the 174-pound weight class as determined by a random draw. The Terps downed the Bison 33-15. The Bison claimed the first bout when Milton Yates decisioned Tony Capone (Valley Stream, N.Y.) 5-0 at 174. This was Capone's first appearance in a dual match this season. Stork followed with a fall over James Blanton in 1:16. Sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) decisioned Kenneth Stewart at 197. Howard came back with a win at heavyweight to even the score to 9-9. Adrian Thompson pinned freshman James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.) in 5:29.
Howard forfeited bouts at the 125 and 133-pound classes and was never able to recover for a win. Three more Terps earned wins at 141, 157 and 165. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) won by a close 7-5 decision over Aron Dorsey at 141. Junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.), in one of his best performances of the year, captured the second Terp fall at 157 when he pinned Stevens Carter in 1:21. This was Booth's first pin in dual competition. Junior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) garnered the final win in the last bout with an 8-2 decision over Ephraim Walker at 165. Senior Josh Munsey (Rockville, Md.) made his final appearance as a Terp, dropping his match at 149.
The Terps followed Howard with a battle against Old Dominion, the team victory came down to the final bout and a score of 28-12. This dual meet saw falls in six weight classes with each team earning three. The match started at the 174-pound class and was the first win, and fall, for the Monarchs. Stork followed with his 12th fall on the season when he pinned Matt Small in 4:00. Vorhies emerged victorious for the second time tonight with a 5-3 decision, in overtime, over Gregg Gill. The Monarchs earned their first pin at heavyweight bringing the team score to 12-9 in favor of Old Dominion. But the Terps came back strong to capture falls at the 125 and 133-pound classes. Redshirt-junior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) pinned Paul Jimenez in 1:56. Junior co-captain, and two-time ACC champion at 133, Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) pinned Payton Lamb in 1:44. This marks York's 16th consecutive win and boosts his dual record to 10-0 and overall to 27-3. York is currently ranked No. 19 in the country at 133.
Mansueto and Weidman turned in stellar performances against Old Dominion claiming the last two Maryland victories. Mansueto defeat Blake Romano 8-5 at 141. Weidman won by a major 11-2 decision over Dan Martin to boost his record to 27-6. Weidman's win also clinched the team victory for Maryland.
The Terps will take a two-week hiatus, after completing the regular season, to prepare for the ACC tournament. The tournament will be held as part of the first annual Mat Jam which brings the ACC, the Colonial Athletic Association and the Southern Conference together in one place for their respective conference championships. The tournament will be held on March 3 on the campus of North Carolina at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
