CHARLESTON, S.C.- Maryland starting pitcher Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) threw a career-high 7.1 innings and limited George Mason to one run on six hits as the Maryland baseball team (2-4) defeated George Mason (0-2) 5-1, Saturday morning at the Citadel Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
The Terps got on the board first with four runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. With one out, Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) singled and Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) doubled to put men on second and third. Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) then delivered a two-run double down the left field line to make the score 2-0. Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) came to bat next and singled down the right field line to drive in Lomas to put the Terps up 3-0.
After Whitmer stole second, Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) had an infield single to put runners on the corners. Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Whitmer, to increase the Terrapin lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fifth, John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) smacked a double and Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) drove him home with a RBI-single, making the score 5-0.
The Patriots added one run in the eighth when Eddie Jordan doubled to score Stephen Johnson.
Terrapin reliever Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) pitched a perfect 1.2 innings including two strikeouts to nail down his first save of the young season.
Schmoll (1-1) tied a career-high with nine strikeouts to earn his first win this season. Todd Simo (0-1) started the game for the Patriots and suffered his first loss of the year.
Maryland wraps-up play in The Citadel Invitational tomorrow against West Virginia beginning at 10 a.m.
