Terps Defeat Mountaineers 6-1

Feb. 3, 2001

College Park, Md. - The women's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers (1-3, BE 0-0) 6-1 Saturday in the College Park Tennis Bubble. The match began with the doubles competition in which Maryland swept all three spots. Although this year's team is young, with four freshmen in the starting lineup, the Terps played strong against West Virginia allowing only one Mountaineer victory. Sophomore Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.), who earned All-ACC honors in 2000, led the team at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. The only senior, Catherine Valantin (Metz, France), is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Causevic teamed up with junior transfer Pamela Floro (Manilla, Philippines) in the No. 1 doubles position. They downed Ellie Earles and Courtney Howell with a perfect 8-0 score. In the No. 2 doubles, freshmen newcomers Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) defeated Helen Adams and Anna Marie Underwood 8-5. Garnering the last doubles win for the day, freshmen Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Danielle Piacente (Rockville, Md.) notched their first spring victory with an 8-3 win over Jenny Watkins and Katherine Agustsson at No. 3.

Causevic, who earned seven singles wins in fall competition, downed Adams in two sets 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles position. Marker and Dubovikov defeated their opponents at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively. West Virginia's Earles fell 6-4, 6-2 to Floro at No. 4. Chavardes battled through a long three sets to earn a win at the No. 5 singles position against Watkins. The match was determined by a 10-point tie-breaker with a final score of 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (10-6). Emma Jeremiejczyk defeated Piacente at the No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2 for the only Mountaineer win on the day.

The Terps are back in action on Feb. 4 when they square off against the Georgetown Hoyas in the College Park Tennis Bubble. The match begins at 1:00 p.m. Maryland continues a five-match homestand with matches against Indiana on Feb. 9, Ohio State on Feb. 10 and George Washington on Feb. 21.
