Washington, D.C. - The Maryland wrestling team (3-4, 0-1 ACC) defeated the American Eagles (4-6, 0-3 CAA), 30-18, Tuesday in Bender Arena. The Terps won five bouts and two American forfeits at 184 and 197 helped Maryland secure the team victory.
The match began with the heavyweight bout as determined by a random draw. Freshman James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.) recorded his third career fall when he pinned Jared Hyman in 1:34. Maryland then forfeited matches at 125 and 133 putting American up 12-6 after three weight classes. Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) garnered the second Terp victory with a 16-10 decision over Kris Monzo at 141. American's Marc Hoffer, earning his fourth consecutive fall at 149, pinned redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J) in 1:50 bringing American ahead 18-12.
Maryland then claimed the next three weight classes to even the score. Junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) won a close 4-3 decision over Aviv Bercovicz at 157. Junior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.), posting a team-high 23rd victory, downed Denis Alampiev 8-6 at 165. Redshirt-sophomore Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) won the last bout of the night when he defeated Mike Reish 10-4 at 174. Aquia's win tied the score at 18. American then forfeited matches at the 184 and 197-pound weight classes securing a Maryland victory for the night.
The Terps have only three days to prepare to face two ACC opponents on Feb. 9 and 10. Maryland travels south to meet Duke on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and North Carolina on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. North Carolina is ranked No. 1 in the ACC, Duke holds at No. 4. Maryland is looking to improve upon an 0-1 conference record as it challenges its last three ACC opponents. The Terps are back at home on Feb. 14 against Virginia to wrap the conference.
