March 6, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis team (4-4, 0-0 ACC) routed cross-town rival American University Tuesday in the College Park Tennis Bubble. The Terps won five singles matches and captured the doubles point with three wins en route to a 6-1 victory. Maryland turned in strong performances across the board with the only loss coming at the hands of a three-set tiebreaker between freshman Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Kristina Georgieva at the No. 5 singles.

The Terps started strong sweeping all three doubles matches. Competing for the first time as a pair was freshman Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Pamela Floro (Manilla, Philippines) at the No. 1 doubles. The duo easily defeated Lauren Martin and Regan Campbell 8-1. Following at the No. 2 spot were sophomore Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and Marker. They won by a score of 8-2 over Jacqueline Hagen and Irina Bovina. This win clinched the doubles team point for the Terps. Senior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) and freshman Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) also earned a doubles victory, the duo's third on the season.

Returning All-ACC selection, Causevic, garnered her fifth dual win after defeating Campbell in two sets. Dubovikov evened out her season record at four with a win at the No. 2 singles. Floro, Valantin and Chavardes each earned a singles win to secure the victory for the Terps, bringing the season to 4-4. Marker fell to Georgieva after three difficult sets and a tiebreak with a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8).

The Terps are back in action this weekend to end a four-match homestand at the College Park Tennis Center. Maryland faces Syracuse on Friday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. and Minnesota on Sunday, March 11 at noon. The team then hits the road for Florida State for its first away match in three weeks and to kick off ACC competition on March 19.
