The Maryland softball squad (34-16, 1-3 ACC) fell victim to a pair of come-from-behind victories by Virginia in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action Sunday afternoon (April 22) at The Park. UVa erased a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Terrapins 3-2 in nine innings in the
first game of the doubleheader, then turned a one-run deficit into a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, Maryland scored a pair of runs in the second inning
to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) accounted for the first run with a RBI-triple and then scored on senior Michelle Burrell's (Owego, N.Y.) infield single. The Cavaliers cut the lead in half when sophomore third baseman Ruby Rojas doubled and eventually scored on freshman first baseman Hannah Owings' single up the middle. UVa tied the game at 2-2 when junior center fielder Kelly McCabe singled to right to score senior right fielder Meaghan Young. Young tripled to right with one out. Young also scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. She hit a one-out double to center and scored on Rojas' two-out single to left.
The Cavs' Kristen Dennis earned the victory in the circle while Maryland's Amanda Bettker (St. Petersurg, Fla.) (12-4) took the loss. She allowed three runs while striking out four. Young, Rojas and Owings each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Burrell paced the Terrapins with three hits.
In the second game, the Cavaliers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Terps took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Burrell scored on Jennifer Potzman's (Trexlertown, Pa.) suicide squeeze.
UVa answered with a run in the fourth. Pinch-runner Traci Tate scored on an Owings RBI-single up the middle before the Cavaliers broke the game open in the fifth.
Junior Erin Allinder earned the victory for UVa allowing one run on four hits in improving her record to 13-3. Freshman hurler Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) (8-6) took the loss for Maryland. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Maryland's Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) also collected two hits.
The Terps are in action in three doubleheaders this week, first traveling to Towson on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Maryland hosts ACC/SASA opponents North Carolina and East Carolina on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
