Sept. 1, 2001

Stats

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The University of Maryland women's volleyball team lost two tough matches today at the Blimpie/Holiday Inn Classic in Bloomington, Ind. The Terrapins started the day with a hard-fought, (3-0) loss to Tennessee by a score of 30-23, 30-27, 30-28. In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Terps dropped a five-game decision to Bowling Green 30-25, 30-25, 20-30, 25-30, 15-9.

The 2001 season features a number of rule changes including rally scoring throughout the match. In the past, only the fifth game used the scoring format where a point is scored on every down ball, regardless of who is serving.

The Terrapins saw first hand how the new rules would affect the games as they finished the tournament 0-3. Against Bowling Green, Maryland started to show signs of bouncing back after dropping the first two games of the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) was terrific, as she smacked a career high 19 kills and tallied eight digs to lead the Terps to wins in the third and fourth games. The comeback fell short as Bowling Green pulled out the fifth and deciding game, 15-9.

DiLivio was one of four Terrapins in double-digit kills as junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) chipped in with 14, senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) recorded 11 and sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) tied a career best with 11 kills also. Jones produced a double-double with 14 digs while Brennan also pulled down a double-double with 10 digs. Junior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) also had a good effort as she handed out 52 assists and racked up 15 digs.

The two setbacks drop the Terps to 0-3 to open the year. Maryland returns to the court next Friday in the B&G Properties Invitational in San Marcos, Texas against Southwest Texas. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
