COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The 2002 Terrapin Classic
Maryland hosts Rider, Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES), and Rhode Island in the 2002 Terrapin Classic this weekend at the Comcast Center. The Terps will start tournament action on Nov. 29 at noon vs. Rider and continue on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. vs. either UMES or Rhode Island. The Fighting Eagles of UMES will be the home team for the second game on Friday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. against Rhode Island. Rider will face either UMES or Rhode Island in the final game of the tournament on Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. and will be the home team on the scoreboard for that game.Maryland comes back to the Comcast Center a perfect 2-0 after defeating Loyola 80-72 in the first game, men's or women's, to be played at Maryland's new arena and taking down Niagara at Gallagher Arena 68-53.
And so the new era begins for the Terps under head coach Brenda Frese, the 2002 AP National Coach of the Year, who now has a 59-30 career record and is in her fourth season as a head coach.
Snapshots of the Terps' First Two Games
In the first game ever at the Comcast Center, Maryland posted a 60-52 win over the visiting Loyola Greyhounds on Nov. 22, led by 16 points from Renneika Razor, who also netted the first basket ever in the Comcast Center. All told, five Terps scored in double figures: Razor (16 pts.), redshirt-junior guard Vicki Brick (15 pts.), freshman forward Angel Ross (11 pts.), junior forward Crystal Washington (11 pts.), and senior guard Terri Daniels (10 pts.). Freshman Chrissy Fisher just missed double figures, posting nine points in her first career outing. Razor and Ross pulled down six rebounds each. Daniels had seven assists in the Terps' opener.
The Terrapins cruised to a 68-53 win at Niagara on Sunday, Nov. 24, paced by a career-high 18 points from Daniels. Razor also posted her second double-digit effort, tallying 12 points and adding five assists. Freshman Charmaine Carr was one point short of a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring nine points in Maryland's second win of the year.
Maryland Vs. The Tournament Field
Of the three teams traveling to the Terrapin Classic, Maryland has met only UMES in its 32-year history, previously matching up against UMES twice. The Terps and Fighting Eagles have not squared off since Dec. 28, 1993, in the Dial Soap Classic in College Park, Md. Maryland won that game 102-31. The only other time the two teams have met was on March 5, 1976, when the Terps captured a 97-42 victory in the State Tournament at Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).
Welcome Back!
Terrapin alum Belinda "Boe" Pearman will return to her alma mater this weekend, this time on the other side of the court. Pearman is entering her fourth season as the head coach at Rhode Island. She has recorded a 30-56 record with the Rams, and enters the tournament 2-0 this season with wins over Kent State (53-39) and Hartford (56-53).
Pearman is one of 19 Terrapins to score over 1,000 points in her career and is currently No. 15 on the list with 1,284 points between 1981-84. Her teams are responsible for three of Maryland's eight ACC Championships (1981, '82, and '83) and she was part of the first NCAA Final Four ever in 1982. Pearman's teams went to the NCAA tournament four times and, in addition to the Final Four, made it to the Elite Eight and the Sweet Sixteen. She was a second team all-conference pick in 1984.
