Senior Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) scored a game-high 27 points to go with seven rebounds and a steal, but the University of Maryland women's basketball team fell to Virginia Tech 60-57 at home in Comcast Center Wednesday night. The Terrapins are now 3-4 on the season.
Maryland trailed the Hokies 25-20 after a low-scoring first half by both teams, but overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to take the lead with less than five minutes left to play. Razor made a lay-up to give the Terrapins a 47-46 margin with 4:42 left in the game. She then converted two free throws to extend the lead to three, capping off a 13-2 Maryland run late in the second half.
Virginia Tech answered with five straight points off of a putback by Fran Recchia and a three-pointer by Ieva Kublina, reclaiming a two-point lead. A jumper by Vicki Brick (Timonium, Md.), who finished with six points and two assists, tied the game again with 1:45 left to play. Again Virginia Tech answered, this time with a three-pointer by Recchia.
Down three with 7.6 seconds left to play, neither Razor nor sophomore Anesia Smith(Alexandria, Md.) could convert on their final three-point attempts as time expired. Smith finished the game with seven points.
Virginia Tech was led by Ieva Kublina and Davina Simmons, who scored 17 and 10 points, respectively. Virginia Tech improved to 5-1 on the season.
Senior Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.), playing against longtime friend and former high school teammate Emily Lipton, was the only other Terp in double figures, scoring 10 points to go along with five assists and seven rebounds.
Lipton, a senior on the Virginia Tech squad, finished with seven points and seven assists.
Maryland returns to action on Sun., Dec. 15, when they host Coppin State at 2:00 p.m. at Comcast Center in College Park.
