Women's Lacrosse Beats Defeats Brown, 19-8

March 16, 2002

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The sixth-ranked University of Maryland women's lacrosse team got its second win of the young season as it handed Brown University a 19-8 loss in Providence. Maryland is now stands 2-3 overall (0-3 ACC) while Brown falls to 1-1.

The Terrapins continued their recent trend of high-scoring outings, putting up their highest goal total of 2002 with 19. In the last three games, Maryland has scored 50 goals (15, 16 and 19) for an average of 16.7 goals per game. Against the Bears, however, the story was the Terrapins' defense.

After Brown got on the board to open the scoring eight-and-a-half minutes in, the Terps scored eight of the next 10 first half goals and never looked back. Brown scored in several short spurts the rest of the way, but the Terrapin runs were overpowering. For the game, Maryland had three four-goal runs and then closed out with a six-goal spurt. The offensive outbursts were complimented by a strong performance in goal by junior Cara Gorman, who drew her first career starting assignment.

Gorman made 15 saves in just over 48 minutes of work while allowing eight goals (.652 save percentage). Gorman's 15 stops were the most by a Terrapin goalie since Alex Kahoe made 16 versus Georgetown in the 2000 season (a span of 37 games) and came in just over 48 minutes of work. Sophomore Alexis Venechanos for the final 11-plus minutes and gave up no goals while making a pair of saves.

On the offensive end, Courtney Hobbs led the way with five goals and a pair of assists. Freshman Kristie Leggio continued the strong start to her collegiate career as she posted her best numbers to date in a five-point outing (three goals, two assists). Senior Meredith Egan (one goal, three assists) and sophomore Kelly Coppedge (four goals) each added four points of their own, while freshman Acacia Walker joined Leggio with her first career hat trick.

The Terrapins return to action on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. as they will play host to Dartmouth College in a rematch of one of the best games from a season ago. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
