CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Maryland volleyball team powered past conference rival Virginia Friday night, beating the Cavaliers in three games (30-26, 30-23, 30-25). With the victory, Maryland improved to 18-4 (7-1 ACC) and has now won five straight matches. Virginia fell to 19-5 overall, 3-5 in conference play.

Leading the amazingly balanced Terrapin attack was Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.), Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) and Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas). The trio recorded 10 kills and 11 digs each.

The Terrapins never trailed in their 30-26 first-game victory, as they took a 12-5 lead on a solo block by Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) and pulled ahead by as many as eight points early in the game. Virginia, behind five first-game kills from Shannon Boyle, pulled within three points, 29-26, but the Terps rallied after a timeout by head coach Janice Kruger and clinched the game on a kill by Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.).

After six ties and three lead changes early in game two, Maryland got an offensive boost off two consecutive aces from DiLivio to lead, 18-13. From there, a balanced attack and solid passing gave Maryland a game point opportunity at 29-23 and Treadwell was able to capitalize with a kill.

The Terrapins overcame an increasingly boisterous Virginia crowd in game three to earn the 30-25 win. The score was knotted 14 times, including the final tie at 25-25, before Maryland was able to pull away on two kills by Smith. An ace by Treadwell on match point clinched the victory for the Terrapins.

Smith and Wagener, one of the nation's top blocking tandems, registered seven kills each. Smith added a team-high six blocks (one solo) and hit .385, and Wagener had a team-high attack percentage of .417 to go with five blocks.

Senior libero Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.) led the Terps' passing game with a team-high 12 digs, and junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) gave out 38 assists.

Virginia was led by Paige Davis, who posted 11 kills and four blocks.

Maryland continues its three-match road swing Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Wake Forest and Sunday, Oct. 26, at Duke. Those matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. The Terps return home to Comcast Center Gymnasium on Oct. 31, for a home match with Clemson, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
