Terrapins Advance In Regional Championships

Blacksburg, Va. - After two days of play at the ITA Regional Championships, members of the Terrapin women's tennis team are still vying for singles and doubles titles. Maryland's two top seeded singles players Emily Marker and Ramona But, both recorded wins and are eyeing spots in the quarterfinals. Marker was active on the doubles side as well, teaming up with Marianne Baker to record their fifth straight win. The duo will play in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) was a late addition to the singles main draw after a player withdrew. In her first career regional singles match, Fusea was defeated by Elena deMendoza (Boston University), 7-5, 6-2.

Emily Marker's (Ann Arbor, Mich.) first match of the day was against Meghan Wolfgram from Richmond. Marker, the No. 7 seed, defeated Wolfgram, 6-3, 6-3. Next up for Marker was Marshall's Ashley Kroh. Marker dismissed Kroh from singles action with a sound 6-3, 6-2, defeat. The Terp senior will face William and Mary's Kate Boomershine, Sunday, at 1:30 p.m.

In her first match of the day, Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania), the No. 11 seed, downed Viviana Figueroa (Seton Hall), 6-4, 6-3. She moved into the round of 16 with her 6-4, 6-3, defeat of Columbia's Molly Condit. But may see a spot in the regional quarterfinals on Monday. The sophomore will have to get past Marshall's Jess Johnson. The pair will face off Sunday, at 1:30 p.m.

Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) recorded a convincing win over Maaria Husain of Penn State. Husain, who was seeded in the top 30 at regionals, lost to the Terp freshman, 6-3, 6-3. Virginia's Kristen James ended Baker's perfect fall singles season. James defeated Baker, 6-2, 6-3. Baker's fall record now stands at 5-1.

In the consolation bracket, Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) defeated a local rival, Georgetown's Eileen Boyle, 6-1, 6-4. In Dent's second match of the day, she was downed by Harvard's Alli Pillinger, 7-5, 6-3.

Keeping Maryland in doubles action is the Terp tandem of Marker and Baker. They defeated Hampton's Mitackocva and Pesatova by default, for their fifth straight win this fall. The duo will take to the court Sunday, at 9 a.m. for a chance to play in the quarterfinals.

Sunday, Oct. 25 marks the third day of play at the Regional Championships.
