Blacksburg, Va. -
As many teams pack to leave Virginia Tech on Sunday night, Maryland's Emily Marker and Ramona But prepare for quarterfinal action on Monday morning. Eight players remain in singles action; two spots belonging to Maryland's top seeds, Marker and But. Both women are ranked among the top fifteen players in the ITA East Regional.
Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who is the No. 7 singles seed, faced off against William and Mary's Kate Boomershine. Boomershine, who was ranked in the top 15, was the highest ranked opponent that Marker faced thus far at regionals. Marker edged Boomershine, 7-6 (6), in the first set. She held on for the win, taking the second set, 6-4. The Terp senior, who is making her fourth and final appearance at the east regionals, advanced to the quarterfinals with the win. She will play Monday at 9 a.m. against ACC rival Lauren Bruch from Virginia.
Sophomore Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) advanced to the regional quarterfinals in a match that was similar to Markers'. Facing off against Marshall's Jess Johnson, But took the first set 6-4. However, Johnson stormed back and pushed the set to a tiebreak. But, the No. 11 seed, held off Johnson in the round of 16 with her, 7-6 (2) win in the second set. In the quarterfinals, But will meet Megan Muth of William & Mary, Monday, at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, Marker and Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) suffered their first loss of the season. They advanced as far as the round of 16, but were stopped by Virginia's Bruch and Fritz-Krochaw. It was a heated match between the conference foes with Virginia coming out on top, outlasting the Terrapins, 9-8 (5).
The tournament featured over a hundred players from over 42 Division I schools in the East. Out of the eight players remaining in the singles draw, the finalists will earn spots in the Nationals Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The University of Michigan will host the event on Nov. 6-9.
