Sarah Treadwell had a career-high 21 kills to lead the University of Maryland past Duke, 3-2 (23-30, 30-27, 30-23, 19-30, 15-7), in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament Friday night in Orlando, Fla. With the win, Maryland (24-7) advances to Saturday's semifinals and will face sixth-seeded Clemson at 4 p.m.
Treadwell hit a team-high .321, had 14 digs and had three blocks in the victory for a solid all-around performance. Maria DiLivio (18 kills, 15 digs) and Lynnsy Jones (14 kills, 18 digs) also posted double-doubles for the Terrapins, and Rachel Wagener finished with nine kills and a match-high seven blocks.
Maryland dropped the first game, 23-30, after falling behind early by as many as eight points. The Terrapins pulled to within three points at 19-22 after a block by Wagener and a kill by Jones, but they would get no closer as the Blue Devils took the game. Leading the Terps in game one was DiLivio with five kills and Jones and Wagener with four kills each.
The match was evened at one game apiece with a 30-27 second-game Maryland victory. After exchanging points for much of the game and playing to 12 ties, the Terrapins pulled ahead on a block by Wagener, a kill by Treadwell and a Blue Devil attack error to lead, 27-24. From there, freshman Teryn Papp provided solid serving and Treadwell came up with three of her 10 second-game kills, including one on game point, to give the Terps the win.
With Jones serving for Maryland to open game three, the Terrapins rattled off five straight points and would eventually build a 12-point cushion at 24-12. The Terps found their serving groove in the third game, as Jones, DiLivio and Lauren Wilson all recorded aces in the 30-23 victory. DiLivio led the Terps in game three with seven kills, and the Terrapins hit .294 as a team.
The Blue Devils controlled game four with a .424 team attack percentage and six kills from Katie Gilman, as they evened the match with a 30-19 victory.
Maryland clinched the match in game five with a 15-7 fifth-game victory behind four kills from Treadwell. The Terrapins jumped out to an 11-5 lead and got a solo block from Wagener on match point to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
Duke was led by Katie Gilman with 19 kills and Tassy Rufai with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Maryland's Aimee Huddleston gave out a match-high 58 assists to go with three kills, 10 digs and a block, and Stephanie Smith added 11 kills and two blocks.
Maryland, the No. 2 seed at the ACC Tournament, faces sixth-seeded Clemson tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Check www.theacc.com for Livestats.
