The University of Maryland volleyball team travels to NC State and North Carolina tonight and Friday, following its thrilling comeback victory over then-No. 4 Georgia Tech Saturday night. The Terrapins, who dropped a five-game match to Clemson on Friday, came back Saturday in front of a record crowd of 1,201 to upset the Jackets and end their 23-match win streak. At 21-5 (10-2 ACC), the Terrapins are alone in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Beating The Best
The Terrapins scored a historic victory over then-No. 4 Georgia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 1, in College Park. Not only was it the biggest upset in program history, it was also the largest crowd to ever see a volleyball match in Comcast Center Gymnasium. The 1,201 fans proved to be an advantage for Maryland, as it came back from a two games to none deficit to defeat the Jackets, 3-2. Leading the Terps to victory was Maria DiLivio, who was honored by the ACC this week for her back-to-back double-doubles against Clemson and Georgia Tech. DiLivio, who earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, had 20 kills and 20 digs vs. Clemson and 19 kills and 12 digs vs. Georgia Tech.
Moving On Up
The Terps, who debuted on the USA TODAY / AVCA Coaches' Poll four weeks ago with two votes, have moved up considerably since their initial listing. After receiving eight votes prior to last weekend's matches, the Terps received 45 votes in this week's poll.
NC State Wolfpack
In matches against NC State, Maryland holds a 30-17 all-time record in the series that dates back to 1977. The last time NC State defeated the Terps was on Sept. 22, 2001, in Raleigh (30-22, 30-23, 19-30, 30-27), but the Terrapins won both matches last season and the match earlier this year in three games. Earlier this year in Comcast Center Gymnasium, the Terps prevailed, 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-17). In that match, Lynnsy Jones led the Terps with 11 kills and nine digs.
NC State enters Thursday's match winless in the ACC at 0-12 (7-20 overall). Leading the Wolfpack is Julia Reis, who averages 3.31 kills per game and 3.49 digs per game. Mary Byrne is in her third season as the head coach of NC State
North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels hold a 26-18 advantage in the all-time series with the Terrapins, but the Terrapins swept North Carolina earlier this year in Comcast Center Gymnasium. Leading the Terps in that match was Lynnsy Jones (11 kills, two aces), Stephanie Smith (11 kills, four blocks) and Sarah Treadwell (10 kills, 17 digs, three blocks).
North Carolina enters the weekend with an overall record of 17-9 (8-4 ACC). Leading the Tar Heels' attack is Molly Pyles, who averages 3.62 kills per game. Dani Nyenhuis averages 3.24 kills per game and 2.51 digs per game.
On Deck
Following this weekend's matches in North Carolina, the Terrapins return home for their last home game in Comcast Center Gymnasium this year. Join the Terps as they honor the senior class of Lynnsy Jones, Lauren Wilson and Fiona DeFreitas on senior night - Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
