The University of Maryland volleyball team dropped a five-game match (30-26, 26-30, 31-33, 30-25, 13-15) to North Carolina Friday night in Carmichael Auditorium. With the loss, the Terrapins are now 22-6 overall, 11-3 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improved to 18-9, 9-4 in the conference.
Lynnsy Jones led Maryland with a match-high 24 kills, and Fiona DeFreitas led the Terps' defense with a career-high 28 digs. Five Terrapins were in double-digits in kills as Sarah Treadwell (16), Rachel Wagener (14), Stephanie Smith (13) and Maria DiLivio (11) all contributed to the balanced attack. Jones (14 digs), DiLivio (14 digs), Treadwell (16 digs) and Aimee Huddleston (69 assists, 10 digs) all notched double-doubles for Maryland, while Smith led the team with five blocks.
Maryland gained an eight-point lead early in game one, 14-6, before North Carolina came to within three points at 22-19. The Terps' lead decreased to two at 28-26, but a kill by Wagener and an attack error by Tar Heel Molly Pyles gave Maryland a 1-0 lead in the match. Despite hitting just .190 as a team, the Terps got four kills from DiLivio and 10 digs from DeFreitas in the first game alone to earn the victory.
The Terrapins fell behind in game two by as many as three points before an ace by Jones tied the game at 16. After gaining an 18-16 lead off a block by DiLivio and Smith and a kill by DiLivio, North Carolina took a timeout to regroup. The Tar Heels, behind four second-game kills from Molly Pyles and Dani Nyenhuis, went on to take game two, 30-26.
The third game was tight throughout, with nine ties before the final knot at 31-31, when two costly errors by the Terrapins' attack gave the Tar Heels a 33-31 victory and a 2-1 advantage for the match. Leading Maryland in game three was Jones with seven kills and Treadwell with six digs.
After exchanging points with the Tar Heels early in game four, the Terrapins were able to build a four-point lead at 18-14. From there, Maryland held its lead and benefited from seven fourth-game kills from Jones to take the game, 30-25, and force a decisive fifth game.
North Carolina jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final game, but the Terps battled back to tie the game at eight on a block by DiLivio and Wagener. Five consecutive ties ensued before the Tar Heels clinched the match with a kill by Pyles.
Leading North Carolina was Dani Nyenhuis and Katie Wright, posting 18 kills each.
