The University of Maryland women's volleyball team was defeated in three games by No. 25 Michigan State, 30-21, 30-27, 30-15, in the final game of the 2003 Maryland Invitational Saturday night. Michigan State finished the weekend as tournament champion with an undefeated 3-0 record, while Maryland finished third in the standings at 1-2. Tennessee took second place with a 2-1 record and Villanova was fourth at 0-3.
The Terps were led by junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas), who finished the night with 10 kills and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) posted nine kills and eight digs against the Spartans, and earned a place on the all-tournament team. DiLivio finished the weekend with a tournament-leading 41 digs and 38 kills in three games.
Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) continued to provide the Terps with a solid block, finishing with five blocks against Michigan State. Smith led the tournament in that category, amassing 17 blocks in three games.
Michigan State was led by tournament MVP Kim Schram, who had 16 kills, two digs and two blocks.
In earlier action from the evening session, Tennessee defeated Villanova in three games, 30-20, 30-24, 30-24.
Maryland is back in action on Friday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for the Florida Atlantic tournament. They will take on The Citadel at 5 p.m. before facing South Florida and Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
