Terps Win Sixth Straight, Edge College Of Charleston In Four Games

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) saved her best effort of the season for a hard-fought victory and her 1,000th career kill, as the Terrapins defeated College of Charleston on Friday night at the Terrapin Invitational. Jones drilled 19 kills and added a match-high 20 digs to lift Maryland (7-2) past the visiting Cougars in four games: 28-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-26.

Jones recorded her 1,000th career kill in the second game of the match, and now has 1,010 kills as a Terrapin. Maryland dropped the first game, 28-30, but battled back to win games two and three behind the strong efforts of junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) and sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.)

DiLivio finished the match with 13 kills, 14 digs and three service aces, while Smith contributed 14 kills and five blocks.

Sophomore Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Terps defensively with a match-high 8 blocks. She also posted 10 kills and hit .300 on the night.

In the fourth game of the match, the Terps and Cougars were tied 15 times before Maryland gained a 21-18 advantage late in the game. They would manage to hold on to the lead right up until match point, when Wagener blasted a kill for the victory.

College of Charleston was led by Stephanie Ballard, who had a match-high 21 kills to go with 12 digs.

In earlier action from the Terrapin Invitational, Virginia Tech defeated Morgan State, 3-1 (31-29, 30-26, 30-18). Virginia Tech's Annie Spicer recorded 12 kills and hit .320 to lead the Hokies.

The Terrapin Invitational continues tomorrow when Maryland takes on Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. in Comcast Center Gym. Prior to the Terps' game, College of Charleston and Morgan State will square off at 11 a.m. Admission to all Terrapin Invitational matches is free.
