Terrapins Cruise To Title At Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team clinched championship honors at the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday by defeating Virginia Tech, 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-23), in Comcast Center Gymnasium. The Terps, now 8-2, have won seven straight matches and two consecutive tournament titles.

College of Charleston finished second behind the Terrapins, while Virginia Tech (5-6) was third and Morgan State was fourth at the Terrapin Invitational.

Senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and junior Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) and sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) earned all-tournament honors. Jones had 11 kills, hit .476 and posted four aces to lead Maryland to the three-game victory.

Huddleston gave out 37 assists and notched four kills, six digs and five blocks in an all-around solid effort, while Smith contributed nine kills and hit .438.

Senior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) had a team-high 12 kills against the Hokies. Virginia Tech was led by all-tournament selection Annie Spicer, who had 14 kills and 14 digs.

In earlier action from the final day of the tournament, College of Charleston (5-4) defeated Morgan State (2-9) in three games, 30-18, 30-13, 30-14. Leading the Cougars were all-tournament selections Stephanie Ballard and Rebecca Wieters with 17 and five kills, respectively.

Maryland is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they host George Mason University in a match-up of local teams. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Comcast Center Gymnasium.
