CHICAGO - Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) posted a career-high 20 kills and hit .500, but the University of Maryland women's volleyball team (10-3) was defeated Saturday by Southern Methodist, 3-2 (30-24, 32-30, 20-30, 23-30, 15-10 ), at the Loyola Flattop Invitational in Chicago. The Mustangs improved to 7-4 on the year.

Southern Methodist gained an early 1-0 lead with a 30-24 first-game victory. Beth Karasek and Kelly Larkan led the Mustangs with six and five kills, respectively. Karasek would finish with 14 kills; Larkan posted 11 kills on the night.

Maryland would fight back in the second game, but fall just short of the win as the Mustangs prevailed, 32-30. The third game, however, was all Terps. Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) blasted seven of her career-high 20 kills, and the Terps hit .415 as a team en route to the 30-20 third-game victory.

The score was evened at two games apiece after the Terps opened the fourth game with five straight points and never trailed, earning a 30-23 victory, but the comeback fell just short as the Mustangs took the fifth and final game, 15-10.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) and senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) each notched 15 kills for the Terps. Jones also added five blocks and Treadwell posted a double-double with a career-high 25 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) had a career-high 10 blocks.

Senior libero Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.) also posted a career-high in digs, with 23 for the match. Junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) contributed 10 kills and 22 digs, while junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) handed out a season-high 61 assists and had a career-high nine kills.

The Terrapins conclude play at the Loyola Flattop Grill Invitational tonight at 5:00 p.m., when they take on Xavier.
