The University of Maryland women's volleyball team won its first conference game of the season Friday night, defeating Duke, 3-0, in front of over 650 fans at Comcast Center Gymnasium in College Park. The Terrapins, who have now won 11 of their last 12 games, improve to 12-3 on the season, while the Blue Devils fall to 4-9 with the loss.
Junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) came into the match with 991 career assists, and wasted no time breaking 1,000. She posted nine in the first game to reach the milestone and would end up dishing out 38 for the match. Huddleston also notched seven kills while hitting a career-high .778, and had nine digs and two blocks in a solid all-around effort.
The Terps benefited from the support of a standing-room only crowd at Comcast Center and took three games from the Blue Devils, 30-27, 30-24, 30-23, to win the opening match of their conference schedule for the first time since 1999.
Senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) led all players with 14 kills, hit .306 and had four blocks. Sophomore middle blockers Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) and Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) were also in double figures for the Terps with 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Wagener led the team in blocks with 7, while Smith finished with five. Junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) turned in a solid defensive effort with a team-high 17 digs.
Maryland outblocked the Blue Devils, 12-5, and had a 55-41 advantage in kills.
Duke was led by senior outside hitter Tassy Rufai, who posted 13 kills while hitting .333.
Maryland is back in action Saturday at 5 p.m. when they play host to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Comcast Center Gymnasium. Admission is free.
