COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team concluded day one of competition at the Maryland Invitational. Friday saw five Terps advance into the semifinals. There is at least one Terp in each Flight semifinals.
Senior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mi.) received a first round bye and was well rested for her quarterfinal match against Cornell's Akane Kokubo. Marker advanced to the semis with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Kokubo.
Sophomore Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) faced off against West Virginia's Catherine Koontz. Dent edged Koontz in a close match, 7-5, 6-4. After defeating Trine Juliussen of Syracuse, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2, Dent moves into the semifinals and will play teammate Emily Marker tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) was troubled by a back strain early in her match against Meghan Wolfgram. The win went to the Wolfgram and the Spiders, 4-3, as But retired.
Senior Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche) took the first set from Cornell's Erika Takeuchi 4-6, but was downed by the junior, 6-2, 6-1 in the end.
Sophomore Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) breezed by West Virginia's Courtney Howell, 6-2, 6-1. Fusea then went the distance against Emily Applegate (Richmond) in a lopsided three set match, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. She will face American's Shasha Zerkalova at 2 p.m. for a chance to play for the flight B title.
Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) had no problem racking up two wins in her first tournament as a Terp. She defeated Ashley Retley of American 6-2, 6-0. The freshman then went on to notch her second win of the day, as she was victorious over Kasia Preneta (Cornell), 6-1, 6-2. Baker will face off against Katie Bramante of Syracuse, Saturday at 2 p.m., in a semifinal match up.
Brooke Rogers (Reisterstown, Md.) was downed by Cornell's Nisha Suda, 6-1, 6-4. Richmond's Patty Devlin defeated the freshman 6-2, 6-1, in Rogers' second match of the day.
Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y) looked confident on the court as she handled Kelly Walsh, 6-3, 6-2. Senic, a freshman, will face off against Katie Karhohs (Richmond) in the semifinals, Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Terps will hit the courts early Saturday morning for doubles action, followed by singles in the afternoon.
