Maryland Outlasts Wake Forest For Five-Game Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team (12-3, 2-0 ACC) defeated Wake Forest in a five-game match (25-30, 30-22, 30-23, 25-30, 15-6) at Comcast Center Gymnasium Saturday night. The Terps, undefeated in conference play this season, overcame a 0-1 deficit and dominated the decisive fifth game for the win.

Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) led the Terrapins' attack with 16 kills, while Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) posted a double-double with 12 kills and a career-high 12 blocks. Wagener also led her team with an attack percentage of .478.

Maryland fell behind early, dropping the first game by a score of 25-30. Wake Forest sophomore Valerie Rydberg posted five kills in the opening game to help the Demon Deacons take a 1-0 lead. Rydberg finished with a match-high 17 kills and had 16 digs.

Maryland would even the score in game two, behind strong efforts from senior Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) and junior Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario), who both had five kills in the second game. Jones would finish the match with 12 kills, four blocks and three aces, and DiLivio notched 13 kills and 15 digs.

The Terrapins took game three by hitting .333 as a team, but Wake Forest battled back to win game four, 30-25, forcing a fifth game.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) opened game five with six straight points off her serve and the Terrapins rolled to victory, 15-6. Treadwell just missed posting a double-double, notching nine kills and nine digs.

Senior libero Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.) led the Terps' on defense by contributing 15 digs, and Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) directed the Terps' offense by having the team hit .286 for the match. Huddleston gave another stellar all-around performance, as she finished with 55 assists, four kills, 10 digs and six blocks. As a team, the Terps had 21 total team blocks.

The Terrapins will have a week off before facing No. 5 Georgia Tech and Clemson on the road. Maryland is slated to square off with the Yellow Jackets Friday night at 7 p.m. in Atlanta, and then take on Clemson Saturday at 6 p.m.
