COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - John Gilchrist scored 16 points to lead
four players in double figures as Maryland routed Mount St. Mary's 89-56
on Saturday.
Chris McCray scored 15 points while Nik Caner-Medley added 14 for
Maryland, which shot 54 percent (7-for-13) from 3-point range. Jamar
Smith notched his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and
14 rebounds as the Terrapins took a 25-point lead early in the second
half then coasted.
Antonio Johnson scored 13 points for Mount St. Mary's (2-9). No
other player reached double figures for the Mount, which shot 29 percent
from the field and committed 17 turnovers.
Freshman forward Ekene Ibekwe had a solid all-around game with nine
points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for Maryland (8-3), which was
coming off an upset loss to Florida State in its Atlantic Coast
Conference opener.
Maryland is now 101-2 at home against opponents outside the ACC
during the 15-year tenure of head coach Gary Williams.
Gilchrist scored on a putback and made two free throws to start a
13-2 blitz in the opening 2 1/2 minutes of the second half. Travis
Garrison capped the run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key that
put Maryland ahead 61-36.
Maryland's reserves - led by Ibekwe and fellow freshman Mike Jones
(nine points) - scored 16 unanswered points to transform a 71-54 lead
into an 87-54 bulge with just under two minutes remaining.
