COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Shay Doron had 20 points and seven steals to lead
No. 19 Maryland to its fifth straight victory, an 81-49 rout of Monmouth on
Sunday night.
Crystal Langhorne and Ashleigh Newman each added 11 points for the Terrapins
(7-1), who are off to their best start since going 9-1 to open the 1996-97
season.
Monmouth (4-4), which has lost three of four games, got 17 points from Naimh
Dwyer and 12 from Courtney Lumpkin.
Playing the Terrapins for the first time since Nov. 11, 1985, the Hawks fell
to 0-2 all-time against Maryland.
Monmouth shot 6-for-25 from the field and the Terrapins turned 17 turnovers
into 22 points in taking a 40-16 halftime lead. Monmouth's first-half point
total was a season-low.
Doron had four points during an 8-0 game-opening run and the Terrapins took
advantage of six early Monmouth turnovers for a 14-5 lead.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Brianne Edwards and Dwyer got the Hawks within
16-13 with 11:22 left in the first half, but Monmouth didn't score again until
Lumpkin's jumper 4:17 before halftime.
In between, Maryland put together a 14-0 run to take a 31-13 lead.
Langhorne's driving layup started the run, Doron contributed four points and
Kalika France hit consecutive 3-pointers- one from the right corner, the other
from the left corner.
With 5:39 left in the game, Langhorne capped a 12-2 Maryland run with a
fadeaway jumper for a 70-38 lead.
