COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland women's basketball team was rated 19th in latest Associated Press Top 25 released today, its first top-20 ranking in 11 years. The ACC also released today that the Terps' Crystal Langhorne was selected the conference's Rookie of the Week after helping the team to a 2-0 week posting back-to-back double-doubles.
The Terps, who are 5-1 on the season, have been making a steady climb in the polls since the start of the year. Maryland debuted the 2004-05 campaign ranked 23rd, and after briefly falling back to 24, has moved up in the rankings since.
Last week, Maryland had a decisive win over Loyola, 77-36, on the strength of Langhorne's (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first-career double-double. The Terps then avoided a near upset at the hands of Xavier, topping the Musketeers, 74-72, making a crucial stop in the final seconds to secure the win. Langhorne had 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting and a season-high 11 boards for her second-consecutive double-double.
Langhorne averaged 16.0 points and 10.5 rebounds over the two games, en route to ACC Rookie of the Week honors. She is the second Terrapin to earn the weekly accolade. Classmate Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) was selected last week after she averaged 12.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game at the Coors Classic.
The Terps make their first top-20 appearance in the Associated Press poll since the 1993-94 campaign when they earned a No. 20 national ranking on Dec. 14, 1993. Maryland held that spot for three weeks. The No. 19 rating is the team's highest since ending the 1992-93 season ranked 11th.
Maryland opens a five-game homestand hosting St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
