Women's Tennis Topped By South Carolina, 5-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team fell to No. 47 South Carolina, 5-2 at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Courts in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sophomore Jennifer Dent racked up her second straight singles win for the Terps, while Emily Marker and Marianne Baker improved to 3-1 on the doubles side. The Terps return to College Park for a brief home-stand after traveling the past two weekends. Maryland comes away from the road with an 0-4 record, with all of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents.

The Gamecocks scored an early 1-0 lead by taking two of the three double matches. Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Marianne Baker got back on track, defeating South Carolina's Laura Ganzer and Chrystin Lucas, 8-5 at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo's record stands at 3-1 for the spring season.

Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) suffered their first doubles loss of the season at the No. 2 position. They were narrowly defeated by Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo, 9-8 (7).

Gutierrez and Suzuki secured the lead for the Gamecocks with an 8-3 win over Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche, France) and Brooke Rogers (Reisterstown, Md.)

In singles, USC took four of the six matches.

No. 44 Marker fell to Danielle Wiggins, 7-6, 6-2, in the number one singles position. Baker was victorious at the No. 2 spot, defeating Christyn Lucas, 6-2, 6-3.

Neda Mihneva played in the No. 3 singles spot for the Terps and was downed in three sets by Laura Ganzer.

Freshman Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.) was defeated by Miranda Gutierrez, 6-4, 6-3.

Chavardes returned to the singles line-up Sunday, playing in the No. 6 singles position. She was defeated by Justine Walsh, 6-4, 6-1.

Maryland's only other singles win came from sophomore Jennifer Dent. Dent collected her second straight singles win when she won 6-2, 6-2, over Magda Wojdylo at the No. 5 spot.

The Terps will return to College Park for their home opener against Old Dominion. They will host the No. 72- ranked Monarchs on Valentines Day at the Tennis Center at College Park. The match will begin at 10 a.m.
