ATLANTA, Ga. -
Despite winning the top three singles spots, the University of Maryland women's tennis team was defeated 4-3, by Georgia Tech at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Sunday. After yielding the team doubles point, the Terps could not hold off the No. 39-ranked Yellow Jackets. With the loss, Maryland dropped to 5-8, 0-3 in the ACC, while the Jackets rose to 11-5, 4-0 in the conference.
The doubles point turned out to be pivotal, with the two ACC foes splitting singles matches. Tech gained the early lead, sweeping all three doubles matches from the Terrapins. Maryland's Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) and Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) returned to the top doubles spot. Baker and Marker were defeated 8-5, by Tech's Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant in the No. 1 spot.
Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) faced Lyndsay Shosho and Maria Nieto in the No. 2 slot. The Terp duo was defeated 8-5. Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) and Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche, France) lost to the Yellow Jackets' Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio, 8-6, in the No. 3 position.
But got things going for the Terps at the top of the singles' lineup. She easily defeated Lyndsay Shosho, 6-2, 6-1. Marker edged Kelly Anderson, 7-5, in the first set of their No. 2 spot matchup. She put the match away when she took the second set, 6-3.
Jennifer Dent reeled off her fifth straight win Sunday, when she defeated Alidon Silverio, 7-6, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot.
With Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Fusea losing in their respective Nos. 5 and 6 matches and the score being tied at 3-3, the match would be decided by the No. 4 position. Baker lost the first set, 6-7, but fought her way back into the match. She forced a third set by taking the second ,7-6. However, Strauss blanked Baker in the third, 6-0, to seal the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Maryland will face No. 34-ranked William & Mary, March 30, for the opening of a four-match homestand at the Tennis Center at College Park. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
