Clemson took two of three doubles matches, as well as three singles matches to defeat Maryland, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The Terps (9-12, 3-7) will await their post-season fate. NCAAs begin May 8 and will run through the 29th.
Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) and Neda Mihneva (Sofia, Bulgaria) notched the Terps' only doubles win on the afternoon. They defeated Clemson's Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts, 8-4. Maryland's Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.), as well as Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche, France) fell to their Clemson opponents in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions respectively.
Singles action saw three straight-set wins put Clemson into the semifinals. Daniela Alvarez defeated Baker 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles spot. Marker lost to Maria Brito 2-6, 3-6 in the No. 4 position. In the final singles position, Karen Rombouts defeated Mihneva, 6-4, 6-1.
