Terps Swept by No. 3 Duke in ACC Tennis Action

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team fell to Duke University, Saturday, at the Tennis Center at College Park, 7-0. The top-ranked Blue Devils were too much for the Terrapins to handle, as they were swept in singles and doubles. With the loss Maryland fell to 6-9, 0-4 in the ACC, while Duke rose to 13-1 , 5-0 in the ACC.

Duke got out to an early lead, taking all three doubles matches. Julia Smith and Tory Zawacki defeated Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and Brooke Rogers (Reisterstown, Md.), 8-4, in the top doubles spot.

Senior co-captain Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche, France) and Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) were downed, 8-2, by Saras Arasu and Amanda Johnson in the second doubles position.

Duke completed the doubles sweep, as Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika defeated Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) and Neda Mihneva (Sofia, Bulgaria), 8-2.

Singles action went in the favor of the Blue Devils as they took all six matches.

But was defeated 6-4, 6-1 in the top singles spot by No. 7-ranked Amanda Johnson.

Providing the afternoon's excitement was Baker and Dent as they pushed their opponents to three sets. However Dent lost 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 in the No. 2 slot, to No. 89 Jennifer Zika. Duke's Tory Zawacki downed Baker 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the No. 3 spot.

Freshman Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.) was dominated by Julia Smith, as she fell 2-6, 2-6. No. 97-ranked Saras Arasu provided the most lopsided win of the afternoon for the Devils, shutting out Mihneva in straight sets.

Completing the sweep was Kristin Cargill as she won 6-3, 6-1 over Chavardes in the No. 6 position.

The Terps return to the courts, Sunday, as they face No. 12 North Carolina at 11 a.m.
