GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Kate Stepanek fired a final-round 75 on Sunday and held on for a four-shot victory individually at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate women's golf tournament hosted by East Carolina on the par-72 Bradford Creek golf course.
Stepanek, a junior from Guilford, Conn., finished with a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211 to best a field of 21 teams and 114 players. It was her second medalist performance of the fall season, as she also won the individual title at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan earlier this month. She took control of this tournament with her round of 67 on Saturday.
Emilie Geury of Augusta State shot a 71 on Sunday to close on Stepanek and finish second at 215. Geury and Stepanek were the only players to post 54-hole totals under par in the event.
As a team, Maryland shot 301 on Sunday to place third overall. The Terps' 301 total featured all four scorers shooting 76 or better. Augusta State fired a 292 on Sunday to leap both the Terps and second-round leader Georgia State to post an 875 and win the event. Georgia State finished second at 880.
Also for Maryland, sophomore Kelly Calkin and junior Jessica Reno each shot a 76 on Sunday to tie for 14th at 222. Those two players had identical scores in each round. Katie Trotter moved up 20 places individually when her final-round 74 tied her for 34th with a 227 total, and Kelly MacWhinnie tied for 75th at 236 after a 79 on Sunday.
Stepanek had one birdie in the final round, but posted 13 pars to play consistently enough to win. Calkin bogeyed her first hole of the day, but stayed even through the next 15 holes en route to her 76. Reno had four bogeys on the front nine, but played even-par on the back for her 76, while Trotter recovered from a double-bogey on her third hole of the day and played even the rest of the way for her 74.
