The Maryland women's tennis suffered its first home defeat of the season, falling to the Clemson Tigers, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Terps fall to 7-8 on the season and 1-3 in ACC play.
The Terps lost two of the three doubles matches to Clemson to begin play. The combination of Marianne Baker and Julia Graca recorded the only doubles victory for the Terps. Baker and Graca topped Maria Brito and Daniela Alvarez, 9-8.
In singles action, Maryland had a tough time with Clemson, as the Tigers swept all six singles matches. Julie Colin defeated Ramona But, 6-2, 6-2, in the number one singles position. Romy Farah edged Marianne Baker, 6-3, 7-5, in the second position. Jennifer Dent dominated Daniela Alvarez in the first set, winning, 6-0. Alvarez came back to take the second set, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-3. Veronika Subertova fell to Alix Lacelarie, 6-4, 6-4. Maria Brito defeated Neda Minheva, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Tamar Huppes fell to Carol Salge in the final match, 6-1, 6-0.
The Terps will face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park.
