The University of Maryland volleyball team swept Rutgers, 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-19), Saturday at the Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational in Comcast Center Pavilion. Rachel Wagener led the Terps with 11 kills and seven blocks (two solo), while Jade Brown and Stephanie Smith posted 10 kills apiece.
With the win, Maryland gave head coach Janice Kruger her 699th career victory. A win over Texas-Arlington in the tournament finale Saturday at 7:30 p.m. would give Kruger 700 for her career. A four-time ACC Coach of the Year, Kruger is in her 18th season as head coach of the Terps.
Maryland (2-0) dominated in game one, as Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown had four kills each and the Terps hit .333. The lead stretched quickly to 10-2 after Stephanie Smith connected on a set from Tedi Doucet for a kill. Maryland cruised from there and earned the 30-20 victory on a kill by Jade Brown.
Game two began closer, as the teams played to a 7-7 tie early. But with help from four kills each by Beth Gillming, Jade Brown and Stephanie Smith, the Terps notched the 30-25 victory.
Game three was all Terrapins as they hit a blistering .341 and Rachel Wagener exploded for six kills to lead Maryland to the 30-19 victory.
Jade Brown finished the match with a .304 attack percentage in addition to her 10 kills, and freshman Maggie Schmelzle led the Terps with a match-high 16 digs. Mary Beth Brown contributed five blocks and posted eight kills, while Teryn Papp and Tedi Doucet handed out 24 and 20 assists, respectively. Gillming finished with eight kills and 11 digs.
Rutgers (2-3) was led by Courtney Stout (11 kills, 10 digs) and Lora Yankauskas (10 kills, 10 digs).
In the second game of the first session, Marshall dominated Texas-Arlington, 3-0 (30-20, 30-13, 30-27). The Thundering Herd was led by Stephanie Cahill (17 kills, nine digs) and Kelly-Anne Billingy (12 kills, seven digs).
Maryland is back in action at the Courtyard by Marriott Ft. Meade Invitational Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on Texas-Arlington. In the 5:30 p.m. match, Rutgers will face Marshall.
