Ramona But and Marianne Baker each won their singles matches and paired to give the Terps a doubles win, but No. 39 Maryland lost its season-debut to 13th-ranked Kentucky, 5-2, in a women's tennis match played Friday at The Tennis Center at College Park.
But needed tie-breakers in both sets to win the top singles pairing over Kentucky's Kim Coventry, 7-6 and 7-6. Baker earned a three-set victory over Joelle Schwenk at No. 2 singles.
The Wildcats picked up the doubles point by winning the second and third doubles pairings, with Danielle Petrisco and Caroline Winebrenner of Kentucky outlasting Neda Mihneva and Julia Graca, 9-7, in the third doubles match.
But and Baker, ranked 16th in the nation, won their doubles match against Coventry and Schwenk, 8-6. The Wildcats' double pair was ranked 18th in the nation.
Kentucky also won four singles matches to close out the victory and improve to 4-0 on the season. Mihneva lost the No. 4 singles pairing in a tight battle, losing the first set in a tie-break and the second, 6-4, to Carolina Escamilla.
Maryland hosts No. 29 Texas A&M at The Tennis Center on Sunday morning at 11:00.
