Terps Drop Three-Game Match to Duke

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terp volleyball team dropped its second straight match tonight, as they fell 3-0 to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Maryland falls to 1-7 ACC (8-9 overall), while the Blue Devils remain undefeated in conference play at 8-0 and 14-3 overall.

The Terrapins outblocked Duke (6-4.5), yet were held to 29 kills in the match. Jade Brown posted her 11th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. Katie Usher and Mary Beth Brown combined for 11 kills. Maggie Schmelzle led all players with 23 digs, while Usher recorded five total blocks on the night.

The Blue Devils started the first game with a 2-5 lead over the Terps, but Maryland evened the game at 8-8 after key kills by Usher and Jade Brown and three Duke errors. After a Maryland turnover, the Blue Devils scored four consecutive points on senior defensive specialist Polly Bendush's serve, and extended their lead at 11-16 and 15-23. Redshirt sophomore Mary Beth Brown's ace, followed by a Jade Brown kills and a Duke error brought the Terps within six points at 17-23. Key blocks by Usher and Jade Brown late in the game weren't enough as Duke went on to win 21-30.

The teams traded leads early in the second game and posted seven ties before they reached an 11-11 score. The Blue Devils went on a three-point run with kills by Hunkus and DeMange. After a Terp error, Duke score two more points when the Terps called timeout at 12-16.

At 15-20, the Terps managed just two scores over the next 12 points while Duke moved ahead 17-28. Jade Brown's kill at 19-29 staved off a game point, but DeMange's kill sealed the second game for the Blue Devils, 20-30.

The pattern of the first two games carried over into the third, as Maryland fell behind 4-8 at the start but quickened its pace and recorded blocks, an ace and a kill by Gillming to come within one at 12-13. Duke pushed ahead, scoring six straight points for 12-19 and would not relinquish the lead.

Usher collected a kill at 15-20, but a Maryland block bounced out as the Terps fell behind 15-23. The Terps fended off two match points at 19-29 on a kill by Jade Brown and a Duke error, but Brittany Staffeil's kill closed out the third game and match for Duke, 21-30.

The Terps look to rebound against Wake Forest in a Friday night contest at 7 p.m.
