Terps Close Out 2006 Season At #14 Boston College Friday Night

Oct. 26, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team (5-8-4) closes out its 2006 season with its first-ever trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for a meeting with ACC newcomer Boston College. The game between the Terps and the Eagles is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.

The game can be seen on ACC Select, the new live web broadcasting service of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Fans can view the action by logging on to accselect.com. Individual games are available for $3.99 per event or unlimited events can be accessed for a $5.99 monthly subscription fee.

Scouting the Eagles
• Boston College, which is in just its second season in the ACC, is 10-5-2 overall this season and has wrapped up a berth in the ACC Tournament with a 4-3-2 conference mark coming into Friday's game. In their last outing, the Eagles hosted traveled Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 22. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, the second year in a row that match-up ended in a tie.

• Boston College is led on offense by forward Gina DiMartino. The reigning Soccer America player of the week has scored 13 goals to go along with three assists this season. DiMartino's 29 points leads the ACC. The freshman's 13 goals is also tops in the conference.

• Defensively, Boston College has been solid once again in 2006, allowing its opponents only 18 goals in 17 games. Goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo took over the starting keeper spot on Sept. 18 and has logged every minute since. The sophomore has allowed 10 goals in 985 minutes for a 0.91 GAA.

• Head Coach Alison Foley is in her 10th season at the helm of the BC program and has compiled a 126-65-19 (.648) record. Overall, Foley has been a head coach for 11 seasons and is 133-73-20 (.633) overall.

A Quick Look At The Terps
• Maryland finished last week with a 1-0-1 record, tying Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., 0-0, on Friday before upsetting No. 11 Virginia 2-0 in the home finale on Sunday.

• Nikki Resnick continued her brilliant season vs. the Hokies, making nine saves in the double-overtime tie. The match marked the ninth time in Resnick's three seasons as a Terps that she shutout an opponent in a 0-0 decision.

• Resnick didn't have to have a showcase game on Senior Night as the Terps defeated No. 11 Virginia, 2-0, at Ludwig Field. Playing with a man-advantage thanks to a Cavalier red card in the 11th minute, Maryland snapped a 625-minute scoreless streak with Emily Maynard's 18th minute goal on a prefectly executed give-and-go with senior Sarah Sample. Redshirt-sophomore Lauren Gamble scored her second career goal in the 67th minute to cap the scoring.

All-Time vs. The ACC
• The Terps have an all-time record of 34-75-14 (.333) in regular season ACC play.

Resnick Tops In ACC
• Senior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick is leading the ACC in several goalkeeping categories.

• The 2005 first team All-ACC selection is tops in the conference with a .900 save percentage. Resnick has allowed just 13 goals this season, while making 118 saves.

• Resnick is also atop the rankings for total saves and saves per game. She has made 118 saves on the season for a per game average of 6.94.

• In nine ACC matches so far this season Resnick has made 69 saves for an average of 7.67 per game.

Resnick Shutting Out The ACC
• Nikki Resnick is second in career shutouts at Maryland with 19, but 10 of those shutouts have come against ACC opponents, including four ranked among the Top 11 in the nation at the time.

Playing Overtime
• Maryland has played five overtime games in 2006. Maryland is 0-1-4 in those with all four ties being 0-0 finishes.

• During the past three seasons, Maryland has played 20 overtime games with a record of 3-5-12 in those games.

The Boston College Series
• The Maryland-Boston College series is in its infancy with the teams meeting just once previously - a 2-1 Terrapin victory at Ludwig Field last season.

• In that 2005 meeting, it was a pair of freshmen that scored goals to give Maryland a win on Senior Day. Kimmy Bunting scored in the 33rd minute to give Maryland a 1-0 lead, but BC tied the game just two minutes later on a goal by Tara Luciani. Aimee Bresani proved to be the hero for the Terps, scoring her fist collegiate goal on a header in the 50th minute.

Playing The Best
• Once again in 2006, Maryland will play one of toughest schedules in the nation.

• The Terps take on six teams ranked in this week's NSCAA poll including three of the top five teams. The Terps faced No. 3 UCLA (L, 0-3/Aug. 27) at the Penn State Classic. They hosted No. 7 Florida State (L, 0-1, Oct. 5). Maryland traveled to No. 1 North Carolina (L, 0-3/Oct. 1), No. 14 Boston College (Oct. 27), No. 20 Wake Forest (L, 1-2/Sept. 28) and No. 21 Dartmouth (L, 0-1/Sept. 8). The Terps lost to Clemson (L, 0-1/Sept. 2),beat Virginia (W, 2-0/Oct. 22) and tied Duke (T, 0-0/Oct. 14) which are currently receiving votes. Maryland also beatTennessee (W, 1-0/Aug. 25) when the Vols were No. 10 in the country at the time.

Beating The Best
• During seven of the past eight seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25. Most recently, Maryland knocked off No. 11 Virginia, 2-0, in its 2006 home finale at Ludwig Field.
