Maryland Swimmers Advance to Finals in First Day of Terp Cup

    After the first day of preliminary competition at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, several Maryland swimmers have advanced to tonight's finals.

    On the men's side, senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) and senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) will swim in the 200-yard individual medley this evening. In the prelims Shepard placed 17th (1:56.80) and Miller followed in 18th (1:56.84). Senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) advanced to the finals in the 50 freestyle, placing seventh (20.92).

    For the women, freshman Andrea Lehner earned a spot in the finals with her third-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:54.94). In the 200 IM, four Maryland swimmers advanced to the finals. Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Terps in 12th (2:08.07) followed by freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) in 14th (2:08.11), junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in 15th (2:08.34), and junior Julie O'Brien (Demascus, Md.) in 21st (2:09.10). Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) will swim the 50 free tonight after placing second in the prelims (23.52). Sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) also advanced in this event after coming in ninth this morning (23.86).

    Finals will begin at 6:30 pm in the Eppley Recreation Center. In addition to the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free, this evening's finals will include the 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, men's 1 meter diving, and women's 3 meter diving.
